Diversity Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

vicissitude Management - Essay ExampleAs argued by scholars, hands diversity is an issue among people, which focuses mainly on the similarities and differences brought by people in the organization. Therefore, success of organization and workforce diversity are inseparable. Despite the role played by affirmative action policies and equal rights legislations in assisting marginalized groups to access various employment opportunities previously closed to them, the exclusion of such employees from influential work organization circles hinders them from fully benefiting and contributing to the overall objective of the organization. Diversity management programs and policies create an embracing environment for these groups that lacked access to employment, and particularly to jobs that are more lucrative (Thomas, 200420). One of the multinational corporations that value diversity is International employment Machines (IBM) and Google. Workforce diversity at IBM has been in existence eve n before the equal employment chance and affirmative action policies became legal. Implementation of this has seen IBM record a notable positive progress for many years (Young, 200343). In support to this argument, the provision of information technology during this time when technology is ever evolving has challenged many and walloping organizations. Therefore, it is arguable that IBMs ability to understand and implement workforce diversity is the core factor behind the large market share won by the company over competitors (Young, 200321). For instance, the organization employed its first female worker in 1899, long before women suffrage movements in the US. Moreover, the organization also employ a disabled employee in 1914, some 76 years before enactment of the disabilities act in the US (Thomas, 200420). Moreover, the organization had black employees nearly 2 decades even before the Civil Right Act came into play. Currently, IBM administration and design of benefit plans com ply with all local, state, and federal laws on equal employment opportunity and affirmative action, as well as accommodating reasonable religious observances. Managers and executives in the company are responsible for ensuring that the working environment is free from bedevilment and discrimination of all forms. The company also carries out outreach and human resource programs to ensure opportunity and compensation for development and growth. Moreover, it adheres to the amended 1974 Veterans Readjustment Act (Thomas, 200420). IBM ranks workforce diversity among the top strategic objectives of the company. The current diversity policies were set rolling by Tom Watson Jr. during his tenure at the company. He sought to adopt the company by his personal values and beliefs, acknowledging that an organization has to change all things except the basic beliefs in the corporate world if it seeks to meet and overcome the challenges of the ever-changing business environment. He identified t rey basic beliefs that remain as the pillars of the companys business and diversity management approaches, which include respect for individuals, emolument to customer, and excellence as a way of life. Today, these values form the three tenets of diversity at IBM equal employment, affirmative action, and work/life. The most prominent among the three is equal opportunity, which offers access to the harassment-free workplace that provides the tools for eliminating disadvantages and that appreciates the work/ life balance, enabling employees to be productive (Thomas, 200420). The current policies of IMB on diversity management were the result of eight tasks forces fit out by CEO Sam Palmisano to understand the different groups

Turkey, apart from the ten founding members, was one of the first countries to become a member of the Council of Europe in the year 1949. Furthermore, Turkey was similarly one of the founding members of The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). (JOSEPH, J. S. 2006). Since 1992, Turkey has had an associate membership with the Western European Union. Moreover, Turkey also fulfills its services in the United Nations, as a member of the Western Europe branch of the Western European and Others Group (WEOG). (BELKE 2004). In 1995, a customs Union Agreement was signed betwee n Turkey and the European Union. At European councils summit held on 12 December 1999, Turkey was accepted as a candidate for membership in the European Union. Despite the fact that Turkey has contri entirelyed tremendously for the welfare of European countries, ironically its accession to the European Union remains at a standstill. Furthermore, France has always holded Turkeys membership in the European Union. (JUNG, D. et al 2008). The motive behind the resistance is non entirely based upon religious affairs. Moreover, the resistance has not stemmed due to a single reason, it is however, a cumulative result of numerous underlying issues. This report includes an overview on the ongoing enlargement process of the European Union and attempts to throw light at whatever of the major reasons forcing France to neglect strong Europe-Turkish ties and fiercely resist Turkeys accession to the EU. The paper also attempts to weigh Turkeys chances of accession to the European Union. Furthe rmore, the paper also attempts to speculate on whether Frances resistance is justified. Overview The long awaited accession negotiations finally opened on 3rd October, 2005. Turkey embarked on a long difficult journey of negotiations and it efficacy take a decade before a decision is finalized. (ARIKAN, H. 2006). The terms of accession and the future benefits that turkey could give to the European Union, if its membership is confirmed, are two issues which have created an unclear and perplexed scenario. (JUNG, D. et al 2008). In order to become a member country, Turkey has to make tremendous efforts to fulfill the Copenhagen Criteria. Firstly, Turkey has to energise its political conditions by creating stable institutions which would ultimately guarantee and follow a republican system and fulfill all the norms of a full European democratic country. Secondly, Turkey must transform into an economically strong country by creating a sound functioning market economy. Moreover, the EU expects Turkey to adopt and stringently adhere to the acquis communautaire i.e. a set of EU laws. Thirdly, Turkey must reform its foundation in an effort to fully adopt and implement the political, economical and financial Laws of the European Union. (TOGAN et al 2005). Opponents of turkey consider the country to be too big and too poor to join the European Union, on the other hand, some opponents consider Turkey to religious to be allowed to become a part of the European Union. Proponents of Turkey consider such opponent claims to be nothing but dubious notions because they recognize Turkey as an economically strong nation. Furthermore, they recognize the fact that Turkey is not bounded by a single righteousness as the Nation has no official religion thus, the issue of religion should not be treated as a major stumbling block to Turkeys dream of accession to the European Union. (ENGERT, S. (2010). Turkeys accession to the EU-A long, troubled journey Since 200 years, Turkey has b een trying to

It is a fact that some children have been denied a adept of accessing the heritage on how they were born. The governing bodies have to propose a bill that advocates genetically manipulated children to find and understand how they came into existence and to gain their inheritance. The attitude and the perception by the state not to recognize these children as humans even though they are issued with the birth certificates is an overwhelming factor that needs to be eliminated. Despite engineering science being used, what matters is that the result that will be generated is a human being. Putting these children in the state of doubt makes them lose confident of themselves being in caput their conception was as natural a s compared to the other kids (Salumets, 2003).Globally, the matter grown to a higher level because the number of children produced with the assistance of technology has continued to grow. Should Christopher Columbus be celebrated for Western Civilization or Essay

Should Christopher Columbus be celebrated for Western Civilization or not - Essay slipElsewhere in the Americas, living standards ar high and are improving. Nevertheless, these successes, which can be traced directly from Columbus first voyage, were also dearly bought. Millions of native lives were lost, through sickness and intentional mistreatment. Several civilizations were effectively destroyed so that a new civilization based on settlers stock could grow. As such(prenominal), Columbus clearly has a mixed reputation. These two views of Christopher Columbus are both espoused by different historical schools. The argument in a sense boils down to one of politics. Those who are more inclined to be anti-establishment and romantic would suggest that Columbus legacy is one of bloodshed and misery. Those who are more realist suggest that civilizations with better technology and organization willing always supersede those who lack these qualities. In a sense it was the destiny of the advanced European nations to take over the Americas and build their own colonies there. The other civilizations such as the Aztecs and the various tribes of North America were simply unable to compete. There are two main historians who support each of these views. The former view is espoused by Kirkpatrick sale the latter by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. The latter view is more sensible. Kirkpatrick Sale makes a powerful argument about Columbus, but it is all too semipolitical and too based on hyperbole. Motives are ascribed to Columbus which he simply never held. The years of colonization were years of subjugation and violence according to Sale (Sale, 152). Nothing good ever came of them. The Spanish were rapacious and built nothing and simply destroyed the environment. This is too simplistic a view of the world. According to Sale, the natives were immensely superior to the Europeans who came to the Americas. He describes how their technology was much better, but sounds quite foolish doing so Indian societies had a variety of technologies, some quite sophisticated and many considerably beyond anything comparable in Europe at the time . . . and certainly could have developed others if they felt any need to do so, particularly in regard to food supply. If they did not, there was likely to be a good reason if they did not anywhere use the plow, for instance, that may have been because their methods of breaking the deformity with a planting stick worked just as well with a tenth of the effort, or because they had learned that opening up and turning over on the whole fields would only decrease nutrients and increase erosion, or because their thought-world would not have allowed such disregardful violence (Sale, 322). This is an incredibly idealized view and one that is not unconnected those who believe in the noble savage. A critic of the book rightly points out that Mr. Sale treats the varied ways of life that actually prevailed in the Americas as if all Indian s were the same, and confuses time as well by quoting late-20th-century Indian spokesmen as though their words applied universally to every tribe and people (McNeil). Fernandez-Armestos sight is more sensible. He feels to historical context. He also sees contemporary political correctness for what it is In the opinion of one self-styled Native American spokesman, he makes Hitler look like a juvenile delinquent. This sort of hype is doubly unhelpful demonstrably false, it makes the horrors of the holocaust seem precedented and gives comfort to Nazi apologists by qualification

Teachers as Agents of Social Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Teachers as Agents of Social Change - Essay ExampleIn this manner, there is a direct relationship between tenderisation and education. While culture gives identity to a parliamentary law, education sustains it. Education also plays a dynamic role in society. It performs the function of an initiator of cordial change. It not only generates untested ideas and values but also transmits them to the younger generation. In this chapter, our attempt will be to examine the relationship between education and social change.Education emerges forbidden of the needs of society. An individual member passes a counsel in course of time, but society continues to exist and new members are added to it by birth. Every society, thus, tries to stay in concert as a unit and develops a way of life. The group members have to train children to carry on the customs, knowledge and skills of the group to preserve and perpetuate their way of life. This function is performed by education. Education also trai ns people to develop new ideas and adjust to a changing environment. Parents and family play an informal role in education. A more formal part comes from education provided by social groups and community agencies. School, which is especially established for the purpose, conducts the most formal education. School has, thus, become a social necessity for providing special learning. It makes possible the accumulation and transmission of knowledge on a large scale which were impossible before. Education, thus, performs several social functions. Starting from the socialisation role in a family, its tasks cover areas like economic organization, social stratification and political ideas. This is the essence of Apples statement that teachers as well as the upstanding education system should be the agents of change.More than a century ago, Emile Durkheim rejected the idea that education could be the force to transform society and resolve social ills. Instead, Durkheim concluded that educat ion can be reformed only if society itself is reformed. He argued that education is only the image and reflection of society. It imitates and reproduces the latterit does not create it (Durkheim 1951 372-373). close to mainstream proposals for improving education assume that our society is fundamentally sound, but that for some reason, our schools are failing. Different critics target different villains poor quality teachers, pampered, disruptive or ill-prepared students, the culture of their families, unions, bureaucrats, university schools of education, tests that are too easy, or inadequate curriculum. But if Durkheim was correct, a society has the school system it deserves. Denouncing the poor quality of education is like blaming a mirror because you do not like your reflection. The first step in improving education is to recognize that the problems plaguing our schools are rooted in the way our society is organized. We live in a competitive economy where businesses and individu als continually seek advantage and higher profits, and where people on the bottom rung of the economic running game are stigmatized as failures and blamed for their condition. Our culture glorifies violence in sports, movies, video games, and on evening news broadcasts that celebrate the death of others through hygienic strategic bombings. It is a society where no one feels obligated to pay taxes for the broader social good and where welfare

Politics and Equality - Essay ExampleKelly Florence, to name only three, among many, who made it easier for women like, Nancy Pallosi, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin to compete with men in the political arena.Introduction The quintessential concept of equality between the sexes is as old, as perhaps the Biblical account of Adam and Eve. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Assignment

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - Assignment practiceThe book is based reveals various themes that be critical to the upholding dignity in the society. On the other hand, Dispatches from the Edge, Shake Hands with the Devil, Night/Diary of a young person Girl, For Whom the Bell Tolls depicts similar themes that reflects on the friendly setting in both social and spiritual aspects. The theme of social justice and that of darkness and light argon common in all the readings. The notion of certainty in the quest for justice in the social arena seems inseparable from either darkness or light. The A Tale of Two Cities is keen on the social justices in the two cities and the main character of the novel reveals the notion. Also, the cities are miles apart, brutality is common. This highlights the notion of both darknes s and light, approaching the social situation from both good and bad perspectives. In addition, the notion of foreign intervention is evident in the book, The few words that he caught from this mans lips, first do it known to Charles Darnay that the king was in prison, and that the foreign ambassadors had one and all left Paris. On the road (except at Beauvais) he had heard absolutely nothing. The escort and the popular watchfulness had completely isolated him. That he had fallen among far greater dangers than those which had developed themselves when he left England, he, of course, knew now. That perils had changeed about him fast and might thicken faster and faster yet, he, of course, knew now. He could not but admit to himself that he might not have made this journey if he could have foreseen the events of a few days. And yet his misgivings were not so dark as imagined by the light of this later time, they would appear (Dickens, Chapter 1, Part 3, p 273).
